APU – Auxiliary Power Unit
APU – Auxiliary Power Unit is a device mainly to provide energy to start the engine or run pre-flight assessment. This is essential to turn turbine engines. Before engines are turned APU needs to be started first either by means of hydraulic accumulator or by using batteries. Auxiliary power unit may run accessories in instances where engines are shut off. It creates comfort to the passengers in the cabin before engines are started. APUs can be used as back-up flight in case of hydraulic failure. Aircrafts with APU can also get power from electric and pneumatic ground equipment.
